Jason Athan, Account Executive, Capital Markets, TD

What brought you to the asset-backed finance and leasing industry?

I was introduced to the industry as part of my school's internship program. I was drawn to the industry because of its critical role in helping Canadian businesses access the tools they need to grow, innovate, and compete. The opportunity to work in a space where financing directly fuels productivity and progress was a natural fit for me.

What do you like about working in this industry?

What I enjoy most is the variety — no two transactions or clients are ever the same. Every deal is an opportunity to learn more about different sectors, industries, and business models. I appreciate the close-knit community and long-term relationships we get to build with fellow industry colleagues and clients. I also love the complexity of deals and speed at which files need to turn.

How do you overcome the challenges you face at work?

I approach challenges by breaking them down into manageable steps and relying on collaboration. Our industry can be complex, but I’ve learned that leveraging the expertise of colleagues and partners is the best way to arrive at creative, practical solutions. I also view challenges as opportunities to develop resilience and adaptability, which are essential in asset finance.

What does it mean to you to be a leader, and how do you lead others in your organization?

To me, leadership is about influence, not title. It means setting a standard for integrity, work ethic, and collaboration that others can look to. I try to lead by example - being approachable, sharing knowledge, and creating an environment where others feel empowered to contribute and grow.

What would be your dream role in 5-10 years when you are closer to becoming a veteran of the industry?

In the future, I’d love to be in a leadership role where I can shape strategy, mentor new talent, and contribute to the growth of the industry. My dream role would combine business development with people leadership — driving growth while also helping the next generation of professionals succeed.

What is your number one travel destination, and why?

My number one travel destination is Italy. I love the balance of history, culture, and food, and how every region has its own unique character. For me, travel is not only a way to recharge but also a way to gain perspective.
