Melissa Montana, Associate, Banking & Speciality Finance Group, Cassels, Brock & Blackwell LLP

What brought you to the asset-backed finance and leasing industry?

I was fortunate to have excellent mentors early on in my legal career who introduced me to equipment finance and leasing. Their guidance helped me see the complexity and variety of work in this space, as well as how it intersects with other industries. As I’ve continued working in this area, I’ve enjoyed the problem-solving nature of the transactions and the ability to craft creative solutions for our clients.

What do you like about working in this industry?

I enjoy how dynamic and varied work in the industry can be. Every deal is different, and there is always something new to learn – whether it’s understanding the nuances of a specific asset class or figuring out how to structure a transaction around a novel issue – each transaction presents unique challenges, requiring a tailored approach and strategic thinking.

How do you overcome the challenges you face at work?

When challenges arise, I often look to others in the profession for guidance. I think that one of the strengths of our profession is that you’re rarely facing a challenge alone, and there is a lot of value in drawing on the experience and perspectives of others. Further, staying informed on industry trends and regulatory changes helps me anticipate and mitigate potential obstacles for our clients.

What does it mean to you to be a leader, and how do you lead others in your organization?

To me, being a leader is about how you show up for others and contribute to the collective success of your team. One way I try to lead is by actively mentoring junior associates and students by offering guidance, sharing resources, and making space for questions without judgement.

What would be your dream role in 5-10 years when you are closer to becoming a veteran of the industry?

I’m focused on continuing to grow as a lawyer and developing a deeper expertise in equipment finance and leasing. In 5-10 years, I hope to be in a role where I’m trusted by clients, leading transactions with confidence, and giving back to the profession through the mentorship of young lawyers.

What is one of your favourite books and why?

One of my favourite books is Between Two Kingdoms by Suleika Jaouad. Something that’s stuck with me is the idea that growth isn’t always linear and that it’s okay to take time to find your way.
