Ryan Ruffner, Business Development Manager, Uplend

What brought you to the asset-backed finance and leasing industry?

I came across the industry purely by chance during my job search after university, and I’m incredibly grateful I did. Equipment finance turned out to be the perfect fit. it’s fast-paced, competitive, and constantly evolving, which plays to my strengths. What’s kept me here for over 12 years, though, is the people. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the best in the business, and the relationships I’ve built across the industry have been a huge part of my growth, and motivation.

What do you like about working in this industry?

I love how tangible the impact is. When we finance a truck, a dozer, or a CNC machine, we’re not just moving capital, we’re helping a business scale, a family prosper, or a new entrepreneur take their first big step. It’s rewarding to see our work translate into real-world momentum. Plus, I enjoy the challenge of navigating complex deals and building long-term partnerships.

How do you overcome the challenges you face at work?

I approach challenges with an athlete’s mindset: stay focused, break it down, and keep moving forward. I’ve learned to control what I can, communicate clearly, and always be proactive. I’m also a big believer in reflection. Taking the time to understand what worked, what didn’t, and how I can improve.

What does it mean to you to be a leader, and how do you lead others in your organization?

To me, leadership is about intention, consistency, and empathy. I lead by example: showing up with energy, pushing for excellence, and genuinely supporting the people around me. I believe in creating an environment where others feel empowered to grow, take risks, and own their results. Leadership isn’t about titles; it’s about how you make people feel and the standards you hold.

What would be your dream role in 5-10 years when you are closer to becoming a veteran of the industry?

I wouldn’t say I have a specific dream role in mind. After recently transitioning back into a direct sales role from sales leadership, my focus right now is on creating real impact - Helping clients succeed and driving results. Looking ahead, whether I’m in a leadership position or still in a sales-focused role, my goal is to be a consistent source of knowledge, motivation, and support for those closest to me professionally and personally. Success as an industry veteran to me is about the value you bring to others.

What is one of your favourite books and why?

One of my favourites is Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins. It’s raw, honest, and relentless. It reminds me that we’re all capable of far more than we think. I take that mindset into both my running and my career. Discomfort is part of growth.
