The CFLA Future Leaders Initiative’s August spotlight features Colin Reynolds, Senior Manager, Sales Development, TD Equipment Finance.

What do you wish you had known when you started out in this industry?

My advice to anyone starting in the industry would be to diversify your expertise – don't be afraid to go outside your comfort zone and learn other functions within your business (i.e. Sales, Credit, Operations etc.). Coming into the industry, I was interested in the Sales vertical but had an opportunity early in my career at GE Capital to work in a Risk Manager role. Having that risk experience has been invaluable as a Sales Manager as it has given me the confidence to negotiate deals with clients as well as provided additional credibility when structuring those deals with my Risk team.

What do you like about working in this industry?

I enjoy working with business owners across many different industries and learning about their unique success stories. Building long-standing relationships with those clients and establishing a level of trust where I am viewed as a strategic partner they can rely on for solutions to help them achieve their goals is a rewarding experience.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Since joining TD Equipment Finance in 2013, the business has experienced incredible growth. Earlier this year, on our 10th anniversary, we entered the next phase of that journey with the acquisition of Wells Fargo Equipment Finance. I look forward to being a part of the integration of the businesses and the new opportunities it will create while continuing to provide mentorship and guidance to our growing team.

What is your favourite industry to finance and why?

I have had the opportunity to finance equipment in many interesting industries in my career; however, one that stands out would be breweries. The craft beer industry in Ontario has exploded in the last ten years and it has been exciting to work with many of those companies watching them grow from local neighbourhood brewers to large full-scale operations with significant brand recognition. It also doesn't hurt that I enjoy the occasional beer!

What sports do you play and why is it important to you?

Sports have always been a big part of my life, including hockey, baseball, basketball, tennis and golf. Aside from the physical benefits of staying active, I have developed many long-lasting friendships through sports. When I started in the industry in 2008, I joined a work softball team, which I am still playing on to this day. Fourteen seasons and two championships later, many of us have moved on to different companies within the industry; however, baseball has allowed us all to stay connected.
